Following on from Thursday’s document your culture workshop with Emma Warren, author of ‘Make Some Space’, who better to invite as the headliner of our first community dance event than Total Refreshment Centre’s central character Lex Blondin.
Total Refreshment Centre boasts a story of creative improvisation and DIY community spirit. While it’s fragile status as a recording studio remains, it was once also a work-in-progress event space and hangout for the likes of Shabaka Hutchins, Nubya Garcia, Kamaal Williams and more who have become household names in London’s jazz resurgence, thanks in part to the visionary Lex Blondin.
As a DJ, Lex brings a record collection steeped in jazz, hip-hop, afro-cuban and truly global grooves, taking you on a musical journey from Havana to London via West Africa and everywhere in between.

Lex is joined by Liverpool’s very own Danny Fitzgerald who’s hosted shows on NTS Radio and produced stellar compilation albums for Soul Jazz Records, plus full local live band Mel Bowen & The Original Series.
All in the charming surroundings of Smithdown Social Club, a former Conservative Club that’s being turned into a vibrant non profit venue and community workspace which becomes a model of fairness and community purpose.
For our first event, tickets are available for a fixed price of £5 via Resident Advisor.
Alternatively, join our members scheme for guaranteed free entry to this and all future Wavertree Worldwide events, plus exclusive merch, tee shirts and member benefits – this is only the very beginning!
